PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate 10-year changes in body weight (BW) and resting metabolic rate (RMR). METHODS: Anthropometric measures, RMR, and markers of health were collected as part of the CENTRAL study in 2012-2013. Pilot investigation was performed on 38 male subjects (50.5±8.32 years at baseline) a decade later (2022), assessing RMR and body weight. RESULTS: In this preliminary analysis we found that mean BW and RMR significantly changed but with great variability between the subjects. BW and BMI at baseline were 95.28±12.54 kg and 31.99±3.7 kg/m2 compared to 92.13±12.21 kg and 30.71±3.11 kg/m2 10 years later, respectively (p<0.05). RMR was 2009.57±263.08 vs 1812.2±261.06 kcal/d at baseline vs at 10 years. p<0.001. Changes in RMR correlated with changes in BW (r=0.533, p<0.001) but weight change could not fully account for changes in RMR. Several baseline indicators of metabolic health (fasting glucose, insulin, HOMA and metabolic syndrome) were not associated with changes in RMR nor with BW. Interestingly, circulating adiponectin levels correlated with change in BW (r=0.320, p=0.053) but not with change in RMR (r= 0.001, P= 0.996). When expressing RMR relative to BW (RMR/kg), the 10-year difference was maintained and change in RMR/kg (but not change in RMR) correlated with baseline waist circumference (r=0.325, p<0.05 vs. r=-0.11, p=0.512). These findings suggest that abdominal obesity might contribute to this difference. CONCLUSION: In middle aged men, 10-year change in BW and RMR varies considerably. Changes in RMR are associated with changes in BW. Measures of abdominal obesity might be used to predict 10-year weight change and changes in RMR.
