We propose an innovative pedagogical framework for teaching nonprofit students leadership principles in a museum. Students observe, describe, and interpret utilizing 17th century paintings. This methodology is adapted from the work of Groopman, MD who suggests that without deep observation and listening, doctors frequently misdiagnoses the situation. We argue similar corollaries exist in nonprofit leadership. The activity allows students to discriminate and focus on their own judgment and assumption-making. Working with a nonprofit leadership professor management and a museum educator allows students to effectively integrate leadership theory, including trait theory, leader communication styles and servant leadership through reference to historical events, religion and storytelling.

Community-based small nonprofit organizations face unique challenges to capacity building. The Capacity Building Institute, initiative under the Center for Public and Nonprofit Management at the University of Central Florida, has developed an ambitious, innovative, team approach to capacity building in two groups of eight small, nonprofit, minority Community-Based Organizations (CBOs). The first project, completed in 2005, and the second project, completed in 2008, offers a fertile resource for examination by both academics and practitioners. Research confirms that a number of factors may influence the successful outcomes of capacity building initiatives of CBOs. This article focuses on community support and internal and external stakeholder development as keys to successfully building the capacity of CBOs. The findings and implications are critical reflections of field experience, survey data, participant observations, and interviews. The article proposes modest actions and lessons learned of relevance to others in the fields of nonprofit capacity building.

The state of the economy has created challenges for human service nonprofit organizations struggling to survive under turbulent conditions resulting in budget cuts, decreased government funding, corporate and individual giving, and increased demand for services. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the phenomenon of the relationship of executive directors and board chairs of nonprofit organizations experiencing a changing environment and factors contributing to relationship development. Data was collected through interviews with ten executive directors and ten board chairs of human service organizations. The results of this study provide a Model of Relationship Development under Situational Conditions. Using the theoretical framework of Leader-Member exchange, the findings suggest that the quality of the relationship has a direct impact on board behavior and that positive relationships can be developed through the training of relational and behavioral skills.

Impact of American Humanics, an Undergraduate Competency-Based Nonprofit Program, on Alumni Career Paths

American Humanics (now called the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance) has a rich history of preparing undergraduates for careers in the nonprofit sector. In this paper, the history of AH is discussed as it relates to the growth of the nonprofit sector and nonprofit management education in general. Additionally, changes in student composition and organizational purpose in the mid- 1990s and 2000s are discussed. To explore the impact of the changes of AH over its history, researchers studied over 500 AH alumni about their perceptions of the impact of the AH program on their career paths and their overall satisfactions with AH program and experience. Findings from these studies revealed that alumni expressed a high satisfaction towards the AH program and a large percentage of alumni chose careers in the nonprofit sector. However, recommendations also provided areas for improvement in communication between campuses and the national office.

This paper informs school administrators of the importance of managing human resources. It details the history of tenure and outlines Kentucky laws surrounding the termination of teachers. Case studies of current or recent litigation are introduced and analyzed to determine the implications these may have on future court cases concerning teacher termination. The research supports the fact that administrators must give teachers proper and timely notification of intent to terminate and a written statement detailing the cause. Administrators should make frequent observations, honestly and fairly documenting all instances of insubordination, inefficiencies, incompetency, or neglect of duty. It is critical to precede a claim of incompetence with a thorough improvement plan, including a detailed timeline during which the teacher is expected to meet performance standards. Written documentation should be objective and contain specific evidence and data supporting charges as opposed to containing general statements of poor teaching.

Service Learning in Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA): It's Not a Minor Point

The mission of the Nonprofit Leadership Alliance (NLA) is to educate, prepare, and certify professionals to strengthen and lead nonprofit organizations. Service learning, a teaching pedagogy combining formal instruction and community involvement, is promoted by the NLA as a best practice for student achievement of nonprofit competencies. However, students enrolled in nonprofit courses, including NLA students, often question whether there are benefits in service learning. Social Exchange theory posits that individuals are rational beings that weigh the rewards and costs for various alternatives and choose that which will offer the most profit. Social Exchange theory would lead us to believe that students seeking certification from NLA would perceive a profit from engaging in service learning with nonprofit organizations. This paper examines the responses of students seeking NLA certification and of students seeking only a minor in leadership and management for their evaluation of service learning. These were students enrolled in an online course that included a service learning project with a community nonprofit organization.

As the need for well-prepared leaders in the nonprofit sector increases, so does the importance of identifying effective educational strategies to prepare emerging professionals. The case study method has been widely used in many disciplines to bring reality into the classroom. These cases are used to prepare emerging professionals to critically evaluate problems and issues and to develop action plans to address them. As more case studies become available in the nonprofit literature, instructors need to carefully consider how to help the students effectively prepare for case discussions, analysis, and reporting. This paper addresses practical instructor and student strategies that will increase the likelihood of a successful case study experience.
