Diary entry Friday, May 28 - Laserre, Laperrouse [Laperouse]
My gosh! What a day this has been! I started running & ended the day that way. We up around 8 but I was slow about dressing so it was after 9 when we had breakfast. I had a 10 o'clock fitting for my suit but got hung up in traffic & was about 15 minutes late. Got back to the hotel just before 11 just as Miss Gilbert arrived. Mr. Dobbs was here shortly after. So we went one way & Duncan [Hines] & Oren another. Miss Gilbert took Nell & me to the Louvre & we went through the Tuileries Gardens on the way there. She showed us the most important works of art including Grecian sculpture with a frieze by Phidias, the Nike of Samothrace, the Venus de Milo & La Giocanda [Mona Lisa], Some important Egyption art & some paintings. Wonderful to see, but too hurried. Back to the hotel shortly before 1. Duncan I had already been down to meet Mr. Vernay, the General Mgr. & made several phone calls. Miss Froc was here promptly at one & we out to a fairly new restaurant - Laserre - for lunch. It was a delightful place & we had delicious food. They made Duncan a member of the Caserale (?) Club so that we are entitled to the special aperitf free on our next visit. After lunch back to the hotel & we put Duncan down for a nap, made more phone calls & finally out shopping. Bought a gold charm at Maubossin [jewelry store] bought perfumes, a mirror & permanent lipstick, toys & dolls for Nell's babies & then Miss Froc went to the Bourse [stock exchange] & bought a gold coin for Adelaide for Nell. Back to the hotel around 5 - talked to Commander Gerber - dressed madly & downstairs to have Champagne with Mr. Vernay & Mr. Bouquet. Sat & talked until 7. Back upstairs & my suit arrived, so wore it to dinner at Laperouse. Food was magnificent. Home to bed late. Duncan very tired.
