The Kentucky Institution for the Education of the Blind was created by Bryce Patten in 1839 in Louisville. He obtained a charter from the state legislature in 1842 and remained the superintendent through 1871. The institution is now known as the Kentucky School for the Blind and serves blind and visually impaired students from birth to age 21. See also Gorin, Sandra.
