Dr. Richard Voakes tribute to ragtime pioneer and Bowling Green native Ernest Hogan. Voakes, a pediatrician with a love for music, began obtaining Hogan's compositions in 2002. From there he began to arrange and compose new instrumental renditions. These songs were compiled in this CD produced in 2006.
Ernest Hogan, born Ernest Reuben Crowdus in 1865, lived in the Shake Rag District through the 1870's. As a teenager, Hogan hit the road with a minstrel show and began composing music which he termed ragtime. He went on to have a career on Broadway, producing, staging and starring in The Oyster Man in 1907 Hogan's success was short-lived as he died of tuberculosis in 1909 at age 44.
