White christening gown made with lace cap sleeves, a v- or yoke-shaped lace insertion or panel in the bodice and matching panel in the skirt. Both insertions are lace edged as is the hem of the skirt. There is a two-button and loop closure on the back of the gown.
Note: The wearer of this christening gown, Johnnie Hunt (Morgan) Caldwell (1865-1888), was born seven months after her father, Confederate general John Hunt Morgan, was killed in combat in September 1864 and two days before General Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox. According to the family history, nuns living in a convent in New Orleans, Louisiana, sewed her christening gown.
