M1840 noncommissioned officer's sword. Cast brass hilt; round pommel; imitation wire wrapped grip; plain knuckle bow; kidney-shaped counter guard; flared quillon; single edged steel blade with a fuller that runs almost the full length of the blade. The letters "J H" are engraved near the center of the knuckle guard.
Note: Sword was given to 20th century Kentucky folklorist and journalist Allan Trout, who was told it was carried by a member of an Ohio regiment.
