Description

Western Kentucky University offers an educational program that emphasizes teaching, research and public service. Research is accomplished in two ways.

The first process is directly sponsored by the University through faculty research grants. These grants are supported by normal departmental efforts to provide an atmosphere for faculty/student involvement in developing and initiating new ideas, technology, and ares of investigation. The second process is that of externally sponsored grant and contract research. Standard 11 discusses both types of funding.

Although there have been some shifts in emphasis during the period studied, certain faculty members have a constant record of significant contributions through the discovery of new knowledge. Adequate evidence is presented in this report to substantiate that there now exists at WKU an atmosphere conducive to scholarly activities. Accordingly, faculty have the opportunity, and are encouraged, to seek outside sources of funding, as well as to apply for research assistance from the Faculty Research Fund.

Although the level of funding, both internal and external, may have been less than adequate in the past, recent changes in institutional policy appear to be leading us to a balance among teaching, research and service. Data provided in this report will substantiate that the intent of Standard 11 is met.
