Wallace delivered this famous paper to a meeting of the Anthropological Society of London on 1 March, 1864. It was printed in Volume 2 of the Society’s Journal later the same year. Following the main body of the paper below is the record of the lengthy discussion that took place at the meeting after its presentation.
