Abstract

Finding aid, scans and typescripts of selected letters (Click on "Additional Files" below) for Manuscripts Small Collection 3697. Correspondence of the Pate family of Cloverport and “Brooks Bottom” in Breckinridge County, Kentucky, and of their relatives in the Ramsey and Brackin families (Ohio County), Butler family (Sumner County, Tennessee) and Benton family (Louisville, Kentucky). George L. Pate writes daughter Mary Jane (Pate) Ramsey of conflict with his son Samuel; of his grief over the death of another son in infancy; of the accidental shooting of a young man by his bride-to-be in 1863; and, in 1864, of an attack on Hardinsburg by Confederate guerrillas. Mary Jane’s sister Sarah also writes her in 1863 of the attempted hanging of a civilian by Confederates. From Tennessee, Mollie A. Butler writes of a guerrilla sighting in late 1865, and of being teased for having her hair “shingled.” The letters commonly refer to various other family members by first name only. Includes a twentieth-century letter from a missionary and former boarder at the Benton home in Louisville; handwritten tracts on temperance, the Civil War, the dignity of labor, and the Biblical story of creation; and some brief Benton genealogical data.
