THE USE OF KETOGENIC DIET IN INDIVIDUALS WITH METABOLIC DYSFUNCTION.
Abstract
Ketogenic diet (KD) is a high-fat, low-carbohydrate diet, designed to induce a metabolic state of ketosis in which the body metabolizes primarily lipids for energy production. Much research was published showing improved weight-loss and glycemia following KD. Nevertheless, there is a controversy regarding the safety of KD, and the potential health risks that might be associated with long-term exposure to KD. After a careful review of the literature, we conclude the following: 1) KD is a useful dietary approach to combat obesity and metabolic dysfunction. 2) KD likely does not increase cardiovascular risk, despite significant lipidemic changes. 3) Before we can recommend KD as a primary therapy for metabolic dysfunction there is an urgent need for good quality research to address the issues of long-term safety of KD in different populations and for standardization of KD both in research and in the clinic.
