Abstract

How can universities effectively use data to answer questions about student performance? Western Kentucky University is one of eleven teacher preparation institutions in ten states that participated in the federally funded Renaissance Partnership Project, which implements the Teacher Work Sample (TWS) as an assessment tool focused on improving the quality of their graduates. Across all disciplines, education students construct a unit of study that includes contextual information, pre-assessment rationale for the unit, assessment data, analysis and reflection. The College of Education uses the TWS to evaluate the proficiency of the teacher candidates' abilities to develop learning outcomes, analyze assessment results and reflect on their teaching.
