WKU Libraries kicks off the spring season of Far Away Places with Jason Polk and Leslie North, Asst. Professors from the Department of Geography and Geology at WKU, who will be talking about leading a study abroad group to Iceland in the summer of 2015. Dr. Polk and Dr. North co-taught this course with faculty from the University of Akureyri (UNAK) in Akureyri, Iceland, a city only 60 miles away from the Arctic Circle. Students learned about the science of climate change and how to communicate the importance of environmental sustainability through topics like oceanic acidification, melting glaciers, geotheormal energy, volcanic impacts, and sustainability practices, as well as learning about the local culture. In addition to outdoor learning activities like hiking, ocean exploration, and caving, water sampling and other laboratory research, and community service, the WKU group also attended a special ceremony, Arctic Roundtable: Passing the Torch and Looking Ahead, hosted by UNAK with the American and Canadian embassies.
The speaker series event took place at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Bowling Green, KY on the evening of February 18, 2016.
