Description

Program for the Urban Renewal & Higher Education conference held in Philadelophia, March 25, 1963. The purpose of the conference:

There is a growing interdependence between city and university. Underlying this relationship is the university's need for the city's cooperation in acquiring space for campus expansion and in revitalizing its environment. The city, on the other hand, recognizes the vital contribution a thriving university can make to the community's economic and cultural base. Furthermore, the city must turn to the university for the intellectual and human resources that are needed to solve increasingly complex urban problems.

Through the Urban Renewl Program (Title I of the Housing Act of 1949, as amended), and especially Section 112, Congress has provided a mechanism that is particularly responsive to the mutual needs of the university and the city.

This conference is designed to analyze the ways in which colleges and universities can participate most effectively in urban renewal activities. The conference will focus particularly on the mechanics of Section 112 and on the various means of coalescing and coordinating community and institutional planning.
