The First Six Weeks Matter
Abstract
Examines the critical role that the initial weeks of an academic term play in shaping student success, engagement, and retention. It argues that early interactions, structured support, and intentional course design significantly influence students’ likelihood of persistence and achievement. Six key actions are outlined that students can implement during this period, focusing on building relationships, establishing clear expectations, fostering a sense of belonging, and providing timely feedback. Emphasis is placed on proactive communication and inclusive teaching strategies that address diverse student needs. By leveraging these approaches, students can increase thier confidence, motivation, and long-term academic outcomes. The presentation ultimately highlights the first six weeks as a pivotal window for intervention that can meaningfully improve retention rates and overall student success.
