Cynthia I. “Sibbie” Melton was born to Charles Washington and Rosanna Lee (Melton) Melton in Henderson County, Kentucky, on 28 September 1866. Her father was a prominent entrepreneur in the Henderson County, and served as the postmaster in Cairo, Kentucky for many years. Cynthia suffered from an unnamed malady that eventually forced her to use a wheelchair. She raised some of her support by selling subscriptions to the Henderson Gleaner. She wrote a column for the Gleaner about the happenings in Cairo, Kentucky, the small community in which she spent her entire life. The Kentucky Library Research Collections owns a scrapbook of these columns (SBK 172). She and her family attended the Methodist church at Poole and were active in many worthy cause in the Cairo and Poole communities. Cynthia, and many of her family members are interred in Henderson County’s Old Salem Cemetery. She died on 15 March 1923.
