Letter, 1 January 1862, to his father from Harris, serving with the 19th Regiment, Massachusetts Volunteers near Muddy Branch, Maryland. He makes comments about the war, the Southern states, and his commander, Colonel Hincks. Written on letterhead with portrait of General George B. McClellan and the words “We have beat our last retreat!” in red and blue ink.
