Hung Out to Dry: Laundry Advertising and the American Woman, 1890-1920
Abstract
In this chapter, I trace the history of laundry in the United States in order to map the ways in which popular ideology regarding women's work and responsibilities resulted in the failure of a nascent commercial laundry industry, and the location of this responsibility in the home and with women.
