Abstract

America's Response to War is a one semester, high school humanities course designed to meet the standards of the American Historical Association as outlined in the Bradley Commission on History in Schools and the National Commission on Social Studies in the Schools. Their reports are titled Building a History Curriculum: Guidelines for Teaching History in Schools and Charting a Course: Social Studies for the 21st Century, respectively. Additionally, the course meets some of the guidelines of the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA), specifically the section prepared by the Council on School Performance Standards which outlined seventy-five valued outcomes for Kentucky's learning goals.

The course seeks to meet four major goals: studies the topic with an interdisciplinary approach, uses original sources and documents, provides a multicultural view, and offers the students ample opportunities to utilize what they have learned in order to prepare for the performance assessments required by the Commonwealth of Kentucky. Further, many of the seventy-five valued outcomes of KERA are identified and can be practiced through the activities suggested in the course outline.

The ultimate goal of this course is to help students learn sufficiently from a study of past wars to become knowledgeable citizens who can help prevent future wars.
