Abstract
Cricket Lusk and her mother Garnet have inherited certain skills passed down from their foremothers. While Garnet’s is one of healing, however, Cricket’s is something rarer and even feared by those in the bell of her West Virginian holler: she can speak with the dead. She faces many obstacles—coming to terms with her own gift and its limitations---and must decide whether to stay and take up the granny woman trade once her mother falls ill or go to the city and escape the holler.
