. . . but quite a number put out with the Southern army. Several owing me are among the number, not more in amount than 200 or 300 dollars.
John Valentine did very well at the store. He had hard work to keep the army from taking the store for a Hospital. He bought a good many medicines at Nashville and Memphis. He, I think more than paid expenses. He reduced the stock of drugs very low and paid some 4000 dollars of my debts. Could he have kept from paying these debts he could have bought articles and made a good deal of money. As it was he could not get much money on hand before he would have to pay it out. Money was very plenty and any price paid for articles. The day before the evacuation of the Rebel army, John Valentine was compeled to knock the heads out of 3 barrell of old apple Brandy worth about $300. The Texas rangers were going about getting drunk and nothing could be done with them and it was thought best to destroy all the liquor in town.
Aunt Minerva and all at home were delighted to see us. Indeed the Secesh appeared as well pleased . . .
