Abstract

Drawing from the social identity approach (Haslam et al., 2018; Turner, 1985; Turner et al., 1987, 1994), this presentation will explore the ways in which our sense of self (i.e., identity) is defined by the groups we belong to (e.g., a team, a club, a profession), and how the power of groups can be leveraged to promote health and well-being. Social identities play a powerful role in shaping our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. Researchers have found that by harnessing a collective sense of “us” (rather than “I”), we can promote greater uptake and adherence to exercise and other health-related programs, and subsequently improve health and well-being outcomes among inactive and at-risk populations. This presentation will discuss the utility of social identity-informed group-based programs in the promotion of various health behaviors in our communities.
