Description
College Heights Herald article about Nancy Cox, Miss Kentucky:
A year ago this week, Western graduate Nancy Cox was in Atlantic City, N.J. preparing to represent Kentucky in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant.
After winning the title of Miss Bowling Green 1990 Cox went on to become Miss Kentucky 1990.
Cox, 24, said her experiences as a student at Western were an asset to her in Atlantic City and during her year as Miss Kentucky.
"The wonderful faculty there helped give me a solid foundation, a good education, a good background and helped me learn to express myself and relate to people."
As Miss Kentucky, Cox traveled more than 25,000 miles in the state speaking on behalf of the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program (DARE). Champions Against Drugs and the American Cancer Society.
Cox said the requirements for her degree in English and allied arts education also helped her. By speaking in front of peers and faculty in class she was "able to get up at the spur of the moment, under pressure, to greet and speak to people."
The Miss America Scholarship Pageant airs at 9 p.m. Saturday night on NBC.
Cox, who is interning at a television station in Lexington, said she has mixed emotions as she remembers when the curtains opened and she heard the announcer say "Live from Atlantic City."
"I'm looking back with no regret, but just wishing maybe I could go back and do it again.
"I can look at it and say 'Hey I was there and did my part for Kentucky'."
