Playing Our Song: Southern Kentucky Notes

Rap & Rock

Rock and roll began in the United States in the late 1940s and earned its name in the 1950s. Rap and hip-hop music came on the scene in the 1970s. Both genres continue to evolve today and many Southern Kentuckians are contributing to that evolution. This section highlights local garage bands and rap groups, some of which have made the big time. Nappy Roots has received Grammy and American Music Award nominations for their work. Government Cheese had a good run touring through the South and is now on the reunion circuit.
