Description
Postcard of Douaumont Ossuary, Meuse, France which was destroyed in the Battle of Verdun in World War I, from Ilee Smith's European scrapbook. She wrote "Tues. July 8 World War I cemetery. Probably 8 - 10 miles from main highway. Posters remind you not to get off the highway as the fields are still heavy mined.
A sight to be long remembered. The long house [Douamont Ossuary] was filled with unknown soldiers bones. The cemetery beautifully kept and roses growing on almost every grave.
Fields & fields of poppies - and a blue flower."
