Model 1860 Light Cavalry saber & scabbard. This steel, brass and wood saber has a wood handle or grip that is wrapped with wire, and a brass guard, hilt and pommel. There is a 27" long fuller on the blade. The steel scabbard has two rings and a steel drag. An estimated 400,000 foreign born soldiers, including German born Sgt. John Gottwallas, Co. C, 13th Indiana Cavlary (U.S.A.), fought in the Civil War. Like many soldiers, Gottwallas carried both regulation and non-regulation equipment and material that reportedly included this saber.
