Description
Dero Downing elected president at the August 22, 1969 regents' meeting. Douglas Keen nominated him and Downing was elected unanimously to a four-year term at a salary of $33,500. Downing, Keen told his colleagues, has "an appreciation for the ever-demanding need for Western's academic advancement, a deep understanding of the problems associated with the over-all development of the university, and is excellently prepared in both knowledge and experience in fiscal management." And, Keen added, "He had, over a long period of time, demonstrated dedication to Western, and his integrity is beyond question." [Harrison, Lowell. Western Kentucky University, pp. 205-206]
